I cleaned out the server room...
« on: July 28, 2007, 09:32:38 PM »
I spent today re-hosting everything on our new server...
Anyway, I'm going to take home one of the boxes and set up a paintball dedicated server, I just haven't decided which box to use...  Are any of these even releastically suitable to run a paintball server?

P2 533 - Windows 98 SE / 192 MB pc100 / 9600XT(I have not idea how this even got in here...)
P2 366 - Windows 98 / 64MB pc100
Celeron 800 XP Pro / 128 MB pc100
P3 933 XP Home / 256 pc133/ 9200SE

Should I stick with their default OSes, or use a copy of DSL, SLAX, etc. to save resources?

edit: btw, these are the least server-y of the group, so I thought I'd save them for something like paintball, while the others (mostly newer) will probably be re-located amongst work for stuff like internal servers and databases.

Just so nobody asks, 'doesn't your work place have t1, why don't you host the box there?' .. I bought all the boxes, but I don't own the bandwidth, err the tubes...

Use that P3 but install some other OS, even Win2k would be good. You want decent ram in it.

If I may make a suggestion:

The old SnowStorm server was a dual p3-450 with 512 meg.  We had slackware on it and hosted 3 DP servers and 3 CS servers on it without a hickup. ( we also had soem VERY fat pipes.....)

If you really want to set up a server, you might want to check on eBay.

I recently purchased 2 HP Netserver 1000 lpr's.  dual 1.4 gig cpus, 512 meg ram, 2x 18 gig hdd ( SCSI 3 10k) with an internal SCSI RAID card.  I installed fedora on one and set the HDD's to RAID 1.  With shipping I paid just under $175.00 each.

Just a thought.

Check THIS out.

I'd use a Windows OS, but preferably 2000 or XP.  Windows clients work better on Windows servers because the floating point calculations are consistent.  Also, the older CPU's don't support SSE, which I currently require on the Linux builds to improve that consistency.  The P3 is probably your best bet.
