Please Help! Something got screwed up on my computer
« on: October 07, 2007, 09:46:48 PM »
Ok, I'm typing this on my parent's computer..
Basically, something got messed up. I'll try to explain what i did in detail so someone might be able to figure out what's wrong. (I'm running Windows XP Service Pack 2)

First of all, I took out my old speakers, which were plugged into the integrated card. I then plugged in another set of speakers i had, just to see if they would work. Then, I found out they needed a digital sound output, not an analog, which was what my integrated was. So, I got a digital pci sound card from my friend and installed it. I plugged the speakers into the speaker out. I then downloaded a driver from the soundblaster website which i thought to be the correct driver. It turned out to be the wrong driver, and it made my computer start up really slow, like it would stay on that screen where it says "windows is starting up" for a really long time. Then, after i typed in my password, it said "loading your personal settings" for about 2 minutes. When it logged on, I uninstalled the driver.

Then i found an old cd with soundblaster drivers that came with the the sound card. I installed that, but i think those didn't work either, I think because they were windows ME drivers.

Now i don't know why i did this, but i think this is where it got screwed up. I decided that maybe deleting some programs from the startup would speed it up. So, i went into ccleaner and went into tools and start up. And i deleted every key other than avg antivirus and netgear wireless assistant. I think i might have gotten rid of an important one. I got rid of rundll32, svchost, and ccapp. Now, Netgear wireless assistant refuses to open, the sound STILL won't work (I'm probably going to give up on this, I'll just put my old speakers back), and on top of that, windows still takes EXTREMELY long to load and log in. So basically, the main problem is i have no internet. Could all this be because i deleted something important from startup?

My recommendation would be to backup all important files while you can and reinstall the OS (Windows XP).

@ spook: Not really sure, how do you check that? Sure there isn't a way to just add those programs back to the startup registry?

@ nopyo: yes, i do have a cd burner/dvd rom drive

Do you have blank DVD-Rs?

if yes, go on download.com and find a free dvd writer software.

if no, go the Asian way out: buy an external HDD, use it, wipe it clean, return it. Your reason for returning it: need bigger one (1TB). most stores won't have 1TB HDDs

Try going to control panel>system> and then click the system restore tab

I'm fairly sure those files you deleted would be in one of those drives

CD-Rs would work, but it would take like 10 cds. or go the Asian way out on my last post.

I haven't deleted any files, just keys. I can still find rundll32 and svchost just by searching them.

Where did you delete the keys from?

edit* By backing up your C: drive, you should recover every key you deleted.

I think one of those is definitely a key you deleted, and every file came up with those same results.

I used CCleaner to edit the startup registry.

Please note: This screenshot wasn't taken off my computer.

Notice the "Delete Entry" button.  :-\

The problem is, i don't know how to restore it to the startup registry. I'm not even completely sure that's the problem. I think I'm going to backup and restore.

I'm typing this on my computer again. I used the restore wizard to restore back to October 1st, and it seems to have worked. However, I still need drivers for my soundblaster card, so i can get my subwoofer going.  :-\

Does anyone know where i could get Sound Blaster Live! drivers for windows XP?
