« on: July 25, 2005, 03:46:39 AM »
I just need help with the basics of map making... I just want to learn how to make crates, barrels, bunkers, ice, water, everything i need to know. I also need to know how to make a room(and have it all covered in one layer).

I have read the tutorials here, and none of them help me. Can someone just like explain it this too me please.

Ok, first of all, never try to make a map that looks like blitz.  That map looks horrible.  Second, hit "L" to load textures, then you can hit "T" to select them, or there's a dropdown list.  To complie the map into a .bsp file, use the "export" menu.  "qbsp vis rad" is a compile with the default settings.

The best way is to use light textures -- these emit light by default.  You can hit "s" and adjust the value of the light, then hit apply face.  Make sure you use a metal texture or something for all the surfaces of the light brush except the bottom one (or the one you want to have the light texture).  And make sure you align it.  Use the surface properties to rotate and adjust the position of the light texture.

You should avoid rotations as they will screw up your brush alignment.  The best way to do it is with clipping brushes.  I think I mentioned these in my other tutorial.  Make a large block brush, then from the top view, shift+right click near one corner of it, then shift+right click on the next grid point down and over.  There are some buttons up at the top for clipping, splitting, and flipping which side you want to clip.  Experiment. :)  You'll need to clip 4 times to create one of the X boards (not counting the windows).  To create the windows, you'll need to use the split.  Split above the window, horizontally from a side view, as well as below it.  Then from the top view split on one side of the window, then for the final side, use clip and you'll have a hole.

There are two buttons: split and clip.  Clip will cut it in half and remove one half.  Split will split it in half, but leave both halves there to work with.

And never encourage rotating brushes -- that seriously messes things up.

Ok, how do i make the brush smaller without rotating it? I usually make it smaller by rotating then resizing.

Forget about the last reply i made. I found out how. I think its easier to use a grid size of 8 than 64(which was what i was using.) Anyway, how do i make my map a different shape besides a square? ???

I usually start out with a square base then add large brushes and slice them up with clipping planes to make them look like rock.

With brainstorm, I used vertex manip and put together a bunch of brushes like so:

/¯¯¯\/¯¯¯\/¯¯\/¯¯¯¯\

(only rounded around curves)

to make the walls i ussually make this:
i make a square usally 64x64 it could also be 64x128 or however you want it.
then on another view i change the size to make it tall enough for a wall.
after i have the square on top view i copy it and put the copy right besides the original brush.
then i manipulate the copy of the brush so it is on diagonal.... something like this:
