im just wondering how people keep their servers open 24/7 like even if the creator of the server leaves people can still come and join. i have a server and i was just wondering how i can do this.

Most of the servers on the list are Virtual Private servers which are ran by a company that hosts a server each month for  a small fee. As far as home run servers are concerned as long as the little "DOS" box is open the server is up.

Most of the servers you play on are not run from home. The server owners actually pay money to rent a serve to host the servers on, thus they can be kept open continuously (and give many players a decent ping!).

If you want to do the same, it would mean paying some cash :P

EDIT: what he said
