Question about DirectX

My card will run DirectX9, but I've noticed better performance in games such as Portal and Team Fortress 2 when I run them in DirectX8. However, I can't seem to get Gary's Mod 10 to run in DirectX8. I know for tf2 and Portal all I had to do was add -dxlevel 80 to the shortcut. But is there any way to default your games to run in DirectX8?

It depends on the game, there's no universal way to force a certain version of directX. -dxlevel seems to be the standard for Source games, so I'd say there isn't a way to do it.
