this is probably the least necessary feature on the board right now... keep it simple and short... they'll go nowhere if theres 90230489 of them

Perhaps what you're requesting is an auto-updater?  It's been a while since I've looked at it, but I think the new version notification links you to the web page where you can download the files.  The problem with an auto-updater is providing the bandwidth.  Also, if somebody found an exploit, it could potentially auto-update to a worm/virus or something crazy like that.
