Feature Request: Change 'banner' to search box
« on: April 22, 2008, 01:55:36 PM »
Heh, the irony here is overwhelming, but I think you should change the "Google AdSense Sucks" banner area to a small Google search box that searches dplogin.com(/forums/).

-People might be inclined to search first if they see a search box on the forums main page
-SMF search is notoriously slow and awful (no boolean, etc.)
-Google allows you to add search modules that default to search just dplogin.com

Or link it to the existing search feature and change the text to Need help with the game? Click here and enter your problem.

Wonder if any other search engines offer that functionality...

That still doesn't help with the slow and generally sucky default search, I think adding a search box is the best solution.

edit:  haha, I don't blame you for being a bit anti-Google, anyway: http://search.yahoo.com/info/ysearchbox_instructions.html

Wonder if AltaVista has web-specific searches.  That used to be the best search engine back in the day - had image, music, and video search along with translation long before Google.  It also let you search for an exact phrase, including punctuation, which was really handy for C code problems, but then it switched over to more of the "here's what you probably meant" Google mentality along with every other search engine, so there was really no point in going to it anymore.  Still not a bad engine, though, I don't think.  Just forgotten.

Google SiteSearch, and any site search, is crappy. =|

Running your own search engine > using Google any day, in terms of relevance.

Use the same peice of code in the existing search page and dump it instead of the banner?
Or is it not as simple?
