Recommend a video card
« on: May 30, 2008, 01:10:50 PM »
I have a friend who bought a new pc (dualcore/3gigs of ram)  but the sucky onboard DX10 chip (Intel G33) prevents him from playing old DX8/9 games, Titan Quest, Age of Mythology, Silverfall, etc.   Even Source gets <30fps...

I recommended the 8600GT (Sub $100 DX10 version of the 7600GT)
Anyone know a good card for him in the $50-$100 range?

NVidia preferably, obviously.

If he can spare a little more, I'd say he should definitely go with one of the lower-end 8800s. I've got a GTS and it handles just about everything I can throw at it just fine. I don't know how they compare to the 8600s, though.

EDIT:
Hey look. This one is about $130 (Minus mail-in-rebate :D), and comes with COD4. Which is like, $40.

I'll pass that one along for sure, I didn't think the 8800 route was anything he needed since the newest game he plays is TF2.  Primarily he'll be sparring in Age of Empires 1-3, Q4 and maybe ET:QW, Kohan 2, etc.  But for $99.99 you can go wrong.

Edit: Wow, 8800s in general have really come down in price.

+1 for Eiii's recommendation  Great bang for the buck. Plus you might find a code out there for free shipping.

Palit is awesome - I got one of their cards free as they sponsored the CCGA Armageddon lan party I go to.

They sponsor PDXLAN as well, which is where I know them from. They must have given away 50 really nice 8800s during those three days.

8600 will get spanked by a 7900 GT, but no DX10. I still recommend it.

Yeah the 8600's blow hard. I would know, I wasted money on one.
