1TB HD Recommendations
« on: July 19, 2008, 01:47:38 PM »
So my disk space requirements have upped a notch again, looking for a 1TB external HD now. Reliability is of the utmost importance! The last time someone suggested the Seagate 500GB and that was perfect, the 1TB version would be my natural choice now.

Anyone have a 1TB HD or can offer some suggestons?

I want to buy me the WD MyBook Studio Edition II in a few month. Its formatted for Mac, so u must reformat it. But the Studio Edition II looks much better than the Mirror or World Editions.

The Seagate 500gb drives had me very paranoid. I really love Seagate and have one of their 300gb drives, but the 500gb ones have an unusually high rate of sudden death (this is judging from Newegg reviews, which even mention specific serial numbers to avoid).

I played it cool and got a WD for the same price.

Anyway, I decided to buy the drive and external kit separate. You usually can save some money doing that, and you get to choose your enclosure and what it'll support with ease. Of course, you'll probably get an OEM drive, and won't have the warranty that regular all-in-one externals boast.

1TB or 2TB :)

I've got one of these and its brilliant.  It's a media server as well, mines either 500mb or 1TB, can't remember.  It's got a control panel through its internal IP address.  Only thing I hate about it is that the power button is on the back of it :P.

hmm IronFist, I've never had any of that trouble with my 500GB Seagate. Something to think about I guess.

Cameron I did think about a network drive but i think they are too big and not very portable? (Could be taking this with me in a suitcase too)

Well the 500 is bout half the size of the 1TB because the 1TB is just 2 500s in there I think.  There are 2 USB ports on the back but I think they just add extra storage.  Havn't tried connecting the computer using that yet. But they are quite light.  My 160GB Linkstation weighs more than the 500gb one.

USB Expansion     2 USB ports make it easy to add a printer for sharing or connect additional drives for even more storage.

Guess not.

Are the normal portable 1TB ones the same size as the smaller versions? (ie the seagate)

If you are referring to the 1TB compared with the 500GB then the 1TB is about 2-3cm wider.  Thats about all the difference.  Dunno if they will fit in a laptop bag / suitcase.  The 500GB should though.

I mean the normal portable ones, not the network ones
