lag probs
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:00:35 AM »
I just got to college a couple days ago and it turns out my dorms internet sucks.

I would like to clear up the fact right now that IT IS NOT MY COMPUTER OR WIRELESS.  I am running my desktop which completely owns dp and most other games and it is wired to the network.

When I play I get random spikes every few seconds and I was wondering if there was something I could change to fix this or if I have to just deal with it.

If it helps at all their up speed is faster than their down speed for some reason.  Maybe 700-800 Kb down and like 1 Mb up.

I think that should be plenty fast to play dp but that's just me.

Sometimes it's like that where I'll almost lag out every min or so and sometimes the black boxes are more frequent but they are just small spikes.

1. make sure NOTHING else is running on your pc ( like torrents)
2. The only other thing thats' left is your internet connection or your wireless conenction.

Can you get an ethernet jack in your dorm to test?

It's probably just the internet and how many people are using it because sometimes it's ok.

No offense knack but do you read the whole message?
Check out the last few words of the quote

hmm yes I read the WHOLE message and a lot of people believe that their pc is NEVER at fault.  But when something changes ( like a new internet connection) it can bring out flaws in YOUR pc that never showed up before.

But then again I really don't know what I'm talking about: I've only been dealing with this stuff since you were in elementary school....

First I would like to point out that I wasn't talking about the my PC part.  It was at the whole wireless part when I specifically put that I was wired.

Here is my desktop specs if you can find a flaw let me know

Intel Core 2 Duo e8400 3.00 GHz
2 x 1GB OCZ DDR2 Dual channel RAM down clocked to 667 MHz to link w/ FSB which is at 1333 MHz
EVGA 680i SLi mobo
Samsung 250 GB HD 7,200 rpm
2 XFX GeForce 8600 GT XXX's in SLi
600 Watt modular PSU

Here is an internet speed test

I'll run one at home over the weekend on my laptop which is crap and post that.

That's an example of my nice lag spikes every few seconds which basically makes the game unplayable.

OK thats packet loss.

Is there any chance of moving to a different area in the dorms or on campus, fire up dp and see if it does the same?

Maybe next week when I have my laptop up and running.  I can try from wireless points around campus.

This is my internet speed test from my house which is MUCH faster.  At least with download.
