Where you can swim the fastest?
« on: November 06, 2008, 11:50:43 AM »
Obviously you can get swim the fastest in air, because you don't get enough force to "swim" in the air when you move your hands (read: you don't float - ergo fly).
No human can swim something solid as well, d0h.

One would say that, of course, water is the place where you can swim faster, but doesn't logic tell you that the more viscosity the surroundings have the more faster you go by every pull.

So, anyone heard of such experiments where they have tested the perfect blend where it is possible to swim very fast? Must be something thicker than water i assume.

The thicker the water/liquid, the more resistance to forward motion it would have.

The less thick liquid, the less resistance to your hands moving in that liquid, hense less forward motion.

hmmm, good question.

You mean swimming (on the surface) or diving? Should it be done without gadgets helping?

As for swimming (from the viewpoint of water):
Higher thickness would make you loose friction energy and you'd also gain resistance in direction of motion. Lower thickness makes you "fall down" as you'd do in air, simply slower and lower pressure would have the same effect, too. Higher pressure would only cause loss of friction energy, i think. Now, a combination of high pressure and low thickness *might* interesting but for that case you should ask someone more experienced.

On normal atmospherical conditions (temperature, pressure, etc.) you are pretty well off with water. Jump in and don't let the cramp get you.

Way too nice of an experiment. Cool professor that is.
