First snake of the year
« on: March 08, 2009, 08:38:14 PM »
Well..

As the temps are starting to get warmer, it was bound to happen.

The dogs were out back whining at something in the woods so I went out to investigate.

The attached pics are of a Southern Hog Nose Snake. This happens to be one of the rare ones that have essentially no banding marks as well as being dark.

Non venomous but they will bite if provoked.

These hog nose run about 20 to 30 inches long but very thick.  Their heads and body are typically the same width.

Unfortunately the Cotton Mouths around here can get over 5 feet long and are not scared  of humans, but they wont come out of hiding for another month.

The biggest snakes I get here are like 3 ft gardener snakes :p

You got any venomous snakes around your area?

hate it when black racers / rat snakes come out.

A few times last year I would step outside in the grass, and see a black thing go flying from right beside my foot. It scares the crap out of me.

This guy was pretty calm.  He was probably just coming out of hibernation.

This particular species is rather funny looking.  Very large body then tapers quickly to a small nub for a tail.

AS far a venomous snakes go, we have copperheads, water moccasins, and cotton mouths, all part of the viper family.  We also have the small coral snakes which are highly venomous.

Last year, a momma copperheads decided to have a litter of babies on my garage.  had 4 or so that I could see less than 10" long and VERY agitated.

During the summer I usually carry my shotgun with my while on the tractor when working out in the brush.  I keep it loaded with bird shot.

On a side note: It looks like the bobcats are back as I have their lil footie prints on my tractor seat again.

It looks like he's eating himself.

Haven't seen a snake for ages, used to always see them in Taiwan but since I moved to China I don't see any. It really does look like its eating itself.
