Vortex Q2
« on: April 26, 2009, 09:54:28 AM »
Passing this along for the admin of this Mod.  Check it out, it is a fun game, and I used to play it years ago.  I'm about to get back into so let me know if you want to play or need any help.

Yeah, I know what you're thinking. Quake 2 is so old. But hey, it's free. You can download the demo version directly from id software. The only limitation is that it doesn't have all the single-player content. I've made things even easier by putting together a complete client-install package that you can download and run in minutes (no install required).

Now you might be wondering why you should bother. While I can't promise you fancy graphics (download EGL or another engine if you need eye-candy), I can promise good gameplay. There's a reason the mod was successful for so many years (released in 1999). It has only been the last year or so that people stopped playing, and I think it's a shame, so I've resorted to begging folks to give it a try.

So what is it, you ask? It's basically an FPS game with RPG elements. Not exactly the first of its kind, but close. There are a bunch of classes to choose from, and each class has a number of abilities, talents, and weapons that can be upgraded. Players can even buy runes and other items from an in-game armory and trade with one another. Alliances can be formed allowing people to share experience and credits (game currency). And there's a bunch of different game modes to keep things interesting (CTF, Domination, Player-vs-Player, Player-vs-Monster, Player-vs-Everything, and Invasion).

It's fun, and I've put years of my life into developing it, so please give it a try. If you like it, let others know and stick around! We need more regulars on the servers!

I actually downloaded this a couple of weeks ago but never actually unzipped and tried it... will do so now :)

edit: there a list of servers running this anywhere?

The one server they have is down, and they don't include the gamex86.dll in the download, so you can't mess around on SP. Not fun.
