Make a competitive game mode where they are disabled and let the rest of us have fun.  There is no downside.

Doesn't matter that it looks awful, it is funny.  People like that kind of stuff.  Might spark some interest in development too.

DP is STALE and BORING.  Give it some life.

Stop being fun-nazis and get with the times.

I bet if this would have been done 5+ years ago we would have something like this by now:  http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1240804

Because everybody running around with spiked models so they can see players through walls is fun?

Honestly yes.  More fun than DP is right now anyways.

TF2 has server-side setting to disable custom skins.

sv_pure 0       (all custom skins allowed)
sv_pure 1       (player skins allowed, weapons not allowed)
sv_pure 2       (no custom skins allowed)

I've read that there are also restrictions on the size of the models.  This is to prevent spiked models.

I think you would be surprised.  Tons of people use custom skins/models in TF2, and they don't do it for an advantage.

I think, in theory, it's possible to do custom skins (on a per-player basis).  They just have to be available on the server.

Well if you think about it wouldn't that work even better?  If server admins are allowed to say what skins can be used on their servers then you could have a set of approved custom skins.  Would this not be an easy way to prevent "cheat" skins while still allowing "harmless fun" skins?

Or go the sv_pure route... and then servers can decide if they don't want skins (or spiked models)

Obviously this wouldn't be for match servers
