Other people can't see my server.
« on: May 12, 2013, 01:02:26 PM »
Hello. I have problems hosting Digital Paintball Build 37. When I host it shows up in the server list, but other people can't see it. In order to connect, they have to enter console and type "connect xx.xxx.xx.xxx" xx being my Dynamic IP.

I am only using a modem, not a router. However I tested to see if port 27910 was open and TCP port 27910 was open but UDP port 27910 was closed. There is no way for me to open it on my Seimens Speedstream 4100 modem, the firmware is crippled. The site Portforward.com offers a program for 30 dollars but I don't trust it, because they also offered a free program that came with mandatory toolbar installation, which usually is an indicator of malware. Instead I downloaded a program called Simple Port Forwarding but for some reason when I try to open UDP port 27910 it fails.

If people can connect to my server manually why is it not on the list? None of my other friends can host either, and one of them is not using a router.

Do you have this command in your config file?

Code: [Select]
setmaster dplogin.com master0.gamespy.com

Nope but I added it to config.cfg just now, is that the right thing to do? I'm wondering why build 37 update didn't add that to my cfg if that is supposed to be there.

When you start a dedicated server, config.cfg does not get executed.  You need to create a config that specifies all the necessary information for a server.  Check the documentation link at the top of this page, it should have some details on how to do this.  In short, make a copy of the server.cfg file (which should have the setmaster command in it), and customize it.

It turns out my master server is already set to dplogin.com master0.gamespy.com

It did say to add this to config.cfg if my server isnt on the list, so I'm going to try it. seta noipx "1"

You need to forward your ports.  Seimens Speedstream 4100 is a 2 in 1 modem/router.

Looked at that already, did not want to use that software because it's 30 bucks and might have spyware, the free software that company had made u install a bunch of toolbars and other junk. I used another portforwarding software which was more trustworthy but which failed to port forward udp port 27910.

The picture they provided in the tutorial for the seimens 4100 on that website does not match what I actually have on my siemens 4100 and I am missing crucial features in my firmware. I have the latest seimens 4100 firmware.

My firmware has no option to portforward either. And it's odd my friend who has no router can't host either. Maybe his ports are blocked by his modem also.

Also the main thing that doesn't make sense is if this was a port issue why can people manually connect to my game? UDP protocol is generally intended for gameplay because packets are lost and unreliable. My TCP port 27910 is open and one would assume that one would use TCP for serverlist functions, why would I need my UDP port open for my game to show up on the game list if people can physically play my game once they join the room?

If people can connect manually, it's probably not a port forwarding issue, as you said.  There are a few things to check:

1) Are you running the latest version of Paintball2? (Build 37 or the build 38 pretest)
2) Have you left the server running for like an hour to see if it would show up eventually?  Sometimes it doesn't get added immediately (thought I thought the "heartbeat" command would have fixed that).
3) Does your IP show up correctly in this list? http://dplogin.com/serverlist.php

We really need to get a server hosting troubleshooter online again...

I'm using build 37, I had it running for 5-20 minutes and nothing happened, maybe I need to wait an hour to make sure.

Well, I couldn't find my IP listed after I refreshed that website you provided, I didn't have it hosted for very long though.

Ok, my IP showed up but I'm just running a test server for map, not a real server. and my port is different. And my ip address listed in game is not my real IP address according to whatismyip.com or ipconfig.

Woops, I didn't see that you said people can manually connect.  Jitspoe is right, probably not a port forwarding problem.

What's the IP listed in-game?

The first one is the IP of dplogin.com.  You can ignore it.

It never shows the actual IP within the server console.

You don't.  There is no need for it to be displayed.  It will automatically use the correct IP.
