Do not read if stupidity offends you. (Ideas)
« on: June 14, 2002, 09:35:32 AM »
Hello.
Okay, now that the greeting is out of the way, lets get down to the point.
This game is about balancing a paintball simulation between realism and fun. There are many areas where this works out.
<insert examples here becasue I don't want to list them all>
But there are some problems that detract from the fun of the game... I can only really think of four. First, jumping. While I think that a JB-style human stack to leap over a barrier and surprise the enemy team is creative, it isn't very fun for someone to so so, land in the middle of a group of players, relase a paint grenade, and eliminate them all. That's why the barrier is there.
Speed is also a factor. Someone jumping and running can easily run right by a bunker, even if he has to pass though the LOS of several people within to do so. BOth of these situations bypass and make useless disigns in maps there are there for the reason of making gameplay more fun. As is right now, this is more like playing instagib with a hyperblaster.
And finally, gas tank reloading time. Now, this may not seem like a long time, but in the time it takes to grab a larger tank, and switch it, the other team can traverse a small map and peg you on the way to the flag. If of course, people actually try to capture the flag, as opposed to just eliminate the other team. A result of the long one-minute respawn time.

Basically, long story short:
1. Jumping might need to be reduced or limited, if not eliminated.

2. Player speed needs to be slown down. The default q2 speed is just much to fast for a game like this.

3. gas reload time should be reduced. Not by terribly much.

4. Respawn time needs to be reduced. By at least fifteen seconds, if not more.

I'm not trying to say that I know everything. Or even that the game suck as it is. I'm just giving my opinions of what would make the games last longer, and be more fun-filled instead of being instagib rush-fests. So. Don't yell too loudly at me.

First off, don't be hard on yourself. You seem to have a concrete understanding of how the game works and are in a perfect position to make suggestions. :)

The only point on which we agree, however, is the first point about jumping. Player speed is fine (it's the bunny-hopping that screws up the gameplay). Gas reload time is pretty negligible, and I think going to affect the game in the same way no matter how long it takes to change canisters. Respawn time should be completely eliminated (like CStrike) if anything; it's the small maps cause people to go for elimination rather than flag capping.

But the jumping I think should be changed. The DP development team, as far as I know, has always had plans to curb the strafe-hopping, but due to the way the Quake engine has been programmed, they've been limited to workarounds like "tripping" (thank God that's a toggle!). Now that the Quake2 engine is readily hackable, and Jit's working on a standalone version of DP, this is the time to make suggestions like this.

So here's my two cents: Make it impossible to launch off hills (Quake3 fixed this "bug") and curb the strafe-hopping so it's not so ridiculous.

Oh, and to all the mappers out there: MAKE BIGGER MAPS! :D

I'm glad that the dev team is using the newly released source code to create this standalone version. I havn't played for a long time, and when I checked the website, I was extremely happy to see the recent news updates. That is what drove me to to make these suggestions, now that player speed and jumping is changeable without fux0ring client-side prediction.
So.
K.
Consider this my re-entry to this cool-ass mod. (phear!)

Everybody wants something different.  I think I'd annoy too many people if I redid the movement physics.  People are just too used to it now.  Even way back when, with tripping, people hated the change.  Instead, I'm going to finish this up, make it standalone, and then Cal and I will make a new game from scratch (with more reasonable physics).  Then people can choose what they want to play - fast and furious, or slow and strategic - rather than making everyone unhappy with a compromise ;)

'realism' mode and deathmatch mode would open the feild to more players I think.. you would keep the long time quakers and add a new batch of people who want something more realistic.. but of course get that stand alone out asap ;]

tip- dont waste your time reloading co2 in small maps.. take the offence the second the match starts and waste the 3 players who foolishly did ;]

That's what I'm talking about. You don't need to think to play this; Right now this is just instagib with a much larger download. And I'm not saying that the game should be realistic, just fun.

Unfortunately you're experiencing a severe case of bad map rotation syndrome, I think.  I'm not sure why, but people tend to flock to servers running maps which are basically a big box full of autocockers, and quit playing when a large, strategic map comes up.  Hopefully you will get to play some larger maps where you can't run from one base to the other in < 5 seconds, or something more strategic like Midnight ][.
