You only need to forward ports on a router.

If it connects directly to the internet, it's a modem. If it links several computers together, it's a router.

If you have a router connected to your modem, cable or dsl it doesn't matter, you will NEED to know how to forward ports on your router so that the outside world can see your server.

Now on to a seperate matter:

Under most circumstances home based servers do not work very well ( read: they suck).

Just keep that in mind.

...And for the love of God, do any of you have the ability to use a friggin search engine? Honestly? For real? WTF?

Is this so hard?
Google: "port forwarding"
http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&q=port+forwarding&btnG=Google+Search

You knew the lingo. You knew what questions to ask. GOOGLE IT and try to pretend you're somewhat intelligent.

WAIT OMG...it gets better

MAYBE...if we think about it...just a tiny little bitty bit....we might do this...

Google: "Siemens Speedstream 4200 port forwarding"
http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&q=Siemens+Speedstream+4200+port+forwarding&btnG=Google+Search

That couldn't possibly return anything useful now could it?

I imagine if you did something like RTFM you might even find more useful information.

OH MAN...you mean you lost your manual...such a shame...OMFG there's that GOOGLE thing coming up again...WAIT did I just GOOGLE "Siemens Speedstream 4200 manual"?????
SURELY that couldn't return anything useful, could it??????

Like THIS: http://www.siemens.com/index.jsp?sdc_p=ft4mlsuo1272700n1272700i1272700pc9z2&sdc_sid=24963696262

Get in the game MAN...GOOGLE IT.

Knack is way too nice.

When configuring your router you may need to read the server guide.  It says to allow UDP packets from port 27910 incoming.  It should already allow outgoing packets.  That worked for me.  If you have a modem i wouldn't have the faintest idea what to do.

Actually no. You need a modem somewhere.

Computer->Modem->Internet
Computer->Router->Modem->Internet
Computer->??->Router->??->Modem->Internet

If your LAN does not have internet access, then you don't need a modem. :-\

Besides that, the router does the port forwarding, not the modem.

Hm.... Only problem with this is that they now make things that are both a router and modem.

Bah you know what I mean.

Yes, but at the time, it was not established if he had a router or not. All we knew was he had a modem, and no one knew if he even needed to forward ports. Eiii ignored the situation where you could have both the router *and* the modem, which most people with DSL or Cable have.

You *don't* need a router to connect to the Internet. There are *other* possible reasons as to why a server would not show on the server list.
