TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A man has been sentenced to four months in jail for cutting down more than 40 trees planted by a neighboring apartment complex, claiming they would undermine the geomancy of his house, a newspaper reported Friday.

Geomancy -- also known as feng shui -- is an ancient Chinese practice of arrangement of space to achieve harmony with the environment. People in Chinese communities frequently consult feng shui experts on the locations of their homes and placement of household objects to improve their livelihoods.

Lo Pu-yi, a feng shui expert, was convicted by the Taipei District Court of cutting down the trees in a complex next to his home on a hill in suburban Taipei, the Apple Daily reported.

Lo's neighbors accused him of cutting down the banyans, willows and bamboos, saying the trees blocked the flow of air and could undermine his livelihood, the newspaper said.

A separate court will handle his neighbors' claim for $12,000 in damages, the paper said.

Arm-wrestling game recalled for breaking arms
Three players reportedly broke their arms while wrestling the mechanized appendage in Japan

August 22, 2007 (GamePro) -- Japanese game maker Atlus said on Tuesday that it would remove 150 Arm Spirit arm-wrestling machines from Japanese arcades after three players broke their arms while wrestling with the machine's mechanized appendage.

"The machine isn't that strong, much less so than a muscular man," said an Atlus spokeswoman. "Even women should be able to beat it," the company claimed, saying that it would check the machines for malfunctions as "a precaution."

"We think that maybe some players get overexcited and twist their arms in an unnatural way," the rep added.

Arm Spirit, which is only distributed in Japan, lets gamers advance through 10 levels battling, among other opponents, a French maid, a drunken martial arts master and a Chihuahua before reaching the final showdown with a professional wrestler.

An alleged Cape Town burglar apparently worked in a police station for seven months using a stolen police uniform, the Cape Argus reported on Tuesday.

It said Ricardo Voight (24) from Ocean View, appeared in the Simon's Town Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Voight faces charges of impersonating a police officer, theft of a motor vehicle and other charges relating to a spate of burglaries in the Ocean View area.

He was apparently a member of a housebreaking syndicate.

According to the charge sheet, Voight arrived at the Ocean View police station in November last year, dressed in a full police uniform allegedly stolen a few days before.

Using the name of the officer whose uniform he was wearing, he is alleged to have told senior staff he had been transferred from the Cape Town Central police station.

Voight was never asked for a route form and accompanying documents, standard procedure in the event of a transfer. He was allowed to start his duties in the charge office.

Apparently, he never received a salary as a police officer.

Voight allegedly broken into a house in Ocean View in June with other members of his syndicate.

The next day, while on police duty, he attended the scene of the crime. A resident pointed him out to police, and he was arrested. Voight has been held in custody since his arrest, and will appear in court again in September.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Leaf it to New Hampshire, where a bank branch was held up by a man disguised as a tree.

Just as the Citizen Bank branch opened Saturday morning, a man walked in with leafy boughs duct-taped to his head and torso, and robbed the place.

"He really went out on a limb," police Sgt. Ernie Goodno said Sunday.

Police said the leafy man didn't saying anything about having a weapon, just demanded cash, and was given an undisclosed amount.

Although the branches and leaves obscured much of the man's face, someone who saw images from the bank's security camera recognized the robber and called police.

Officers said James Coldwell, 49, was arrested early Sunday at his Manchester home and charged with robbery. Arraignment was not expected until Monday.

"China has banned Buddhist monks in Tibet from reincarnating without government permission. This article is both hilarious and sad, looking at the lengths to which a government will go to regulate thought through censorship. It also goes into some of the more subtle politics of the current 72-year-old Dalai Lama as he thinks about his political and spiritual successor. The Dalai Lama 'refuses to be reborn in Tibet so long as it's under Chinese control.'"

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — A knife-wielding robber needed only $4, so he refused to take a $10 bill from his victim and waited while the man made change at a pizza parlor, police said Tuesday.

He then took the $4 and ran off, only to be captured a few blocks away, police said.

The suspect, James Mitchell, 48, was arraigned Tuesday on robbery and weapon charges. His attorney, Arlene Popkin, refused to comment.

Police Capt. Joseph DeCarlo said it "really is an odd case, but it is a robbery."

The confrontation began over an artificial rose that the 18-year-old victim had just bought, police said.

"He came out of the store and was approached by the suspect, who said, 'Give me the rose,'" DeCarlo said. "The kid told him, 'Go in there and get one.' But the suspect says, 'I want that one, and your money, too,' and pulls out a knife.

When the teen said all he had was $10, the suspect said he wanted only $4, DeCarlo said.

"He tells the kid to go into the pizza parlor and get change," DeCarlo said. "Then the kid comes out, he takes his $4 and he leaves."

The teenager and his mother, who was across the street, called police and led officers to Mitchell, DeCarlo said.

He couldn't say why Mitchell wanted only $4.

What are they going to steal next, the eggs from your fridge?

A dairy thief swiped two coolers of milk from an Orland Park home early last Monday morning, according to Orland Park police.

"I woke up, went outside around 7:30 or 8 and said to my husband, 'All right, you played a nasty trick on me. Where's the milk?' " said the victim, who lives on the 8300 block of Arrowhead Lane. "I felt so weird calling the police and saying, 'My milk was stolen.' "

Every other week, Oberweis delivers more than a dozen half-gallon jugs of milk to the family's home.

The dairy company replaced the family's milk -- 13 bottles of 2 percent and one of skim --free of charge, Oberweis President Bob Renaut said. The stolen milk was worth $43, he said.

He said most milk theft occurs in downtown Chicago.

"It's mostly homeless people," he said.

Last year, Chicago Police caught someone following an Oberweis distributor and filching the milk.

"He wasn't reselling it," Renaut said. "He was stealing it for his own family."

Renaut doesn't think customers should worry about losing the milk delivered to their doorsteps overnight. Oberweis makes 30,000 deliveries a week and has had fewer than 10 thefts this year, Renaut said.

Since the theft, the family has asked that Oberweis deliver milk to its back yard.

Bloom bids farewell to giant muffin
The giant missing muffin is toast.

That’s the word from Greer, S.C., police, about the fate of the 4-foot-tall, 6-foot-wide, 200-pound “Bloomberry” muffin stolen from outside a Bloom grocery store.

“We’re very disappointed that it wasn’t recovered intact, but the mystery is solved,” said Karen Peterson, spokeswoman for Lion LLC, which owns Bloom.

The giant pastry, a Bloom’s icon constructed two years ago for an advertising campaign, was stolen Friday, July 13, then set on fire and run over, Peterson said.

It was located Aug. 8, but “had been burned beyond recognition," according to a Greer Police Department press release.

Lt. Chris Varner said that, during the investigation into the giant pastry’s disappearance, police checked a surveillance video from the Bloom store. They also received an anonymous tip, according to Peterson.

“We looked at the vehicles, located some kids in similar vehicles and started talking to them,” Varner said. One juvenile told police he knew where the muffin was.

“They confessed that they burned it. The night they stole it, they set it on fire with gasoline,” Varner said.

Despite its state, Varner said, police believe that the burned remains are indeed the giant Bloomberry. “But we can’t do any DNA testing,” he said.

Police will continue to interview the suspects, who could face grand larceny charges because of the cost of the muffin — $4,500, Varner said.

Peterson said that Bloom will not press charges.

Police will not release the names of suspects due to their ages and the continuing investigation.

“It was just a lack of anything else to do,” Varner said. “They thought it would be cute to steal the Bloomberry muffin.”

Peterson said that, if the anonymous tipster comes forward, he or she will receive the $300 reward and Bloom will donate $300 to the Loaves and Fishes food bank.

Will Bloom replace its large signature sweet?

“We’re hoping to,” Peterson said. “It’s a very unique marketing tool. But nothing will ever replace the original.”

The Stupid Story of the Week is reported by Tracy Majka.

Two men robbed a Domino's delivery man of three large pizzas, two bottles of Sprite, 20 chicken wings, and 20 chicken "kickers" -- but took none of his money. Perhaps we should introduce them to our other hungry criminals from this week: Domino's men, meet beer, potato chips and beef jerkey thieves.

PHOENIX -- A man and woman suspected of robbing a roadside stand of $40, a mango and an ear of corn have been arrested.

The pair made away with the loot after pointing a gun at the person running the stand on Sunday in the town of Guadalupe east of Phoenix, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and found a man and a woman inside a car matching the description provided by the alleged victim.

They arrested the man, who deputies believe is the gunman, after he ran from the vehicle. The woman, who was seen running from the car, was found hiding in a nearby yard a short time later.

Their names were not released.

BERLIN - A German man said on Thursday he feared he may have built his own tomb after a vehicle plowed into his house for the 10th time.

"If we stay, someone's eventually going to kill us. We're living in a time bomb," Manfred Sedlazek, 59, told Reuters.

Sedlazek is reluctant to leave the house he built himself, which is on a bend of a busy road, but said it may be his only chance of survival.

Earlier this week, a 40-ton truck blasted through the side of the red-brick house in the village of Karlshoefen, in northern Germany. Sedlazek returned home from shopping to find the shattered vehicle sticking out of his living room.

Police estimated the damage at more than 100,000 euros ($136,100).

Nine previous smashes into the two-storey building Sedlazek shares with his wife have wrecked his kitchen, bedroom and garden, causing damage worth tens of thousands of euros.

BERLIN - Three hundred chickens died in panic early on Sunday when a drunken German teenager on a joyride crashed a van into their shed, police said.

"Apparently some of the chickens were so desperate to get away that they ran into the wall and died," the spokesman said. "Others suffered heart attacks."

The 17-year-old from the western city of Kassel crashed the van through the wall of a shed containing around 1,000 birds and then returned to a nearby fairground where he was staying, according to a spokesman for the local police. The youth was arrested.
