« on: September 09, 2007, 09:36:04 PM »
I've been trying to get some good humming bird pics in my back yard.

Here's the best i've gotten yet...

Canon PowerShot S1 IS:
f/3.1
1/250 sec shutter
58mm focal
iso 50 or 200 (can't recall)

Was standing about 3ft from subject.

Female Ruby Throated.

Wow I'm surprised you could even get one that good. Since they are quick little boogers. :)

I saw one die. Dead ones are much easier to take pictures of.

I have 6 bird feeders and two hummingbird feeders in my back yard.
I have a pair of ruby throated hummingbirds that have laid claim to the two feeders. Actually the male laid claim and allows the female to enjoy HIS territory.
Both feeders are right at eye level to me (6'3") and easily accessible.
The female was trying to get in and get a drink, but the male kept chasing her off. So when she finally got the chance to get in and get a drink she didn't care that we were close by. I noticed this and grabbed my camera and just waited. Out patio and grill are about 8 feet away from where the one feeder hangs.

I have a bunch of pictures, that one is just the best so far. Having a better camera (which I plan on getting) will help enormously!

Wow, that's a nice picture. :D

btw, does your camera have burst function? That's much easier for taking pictures of quick moving things.
