I'd say that's due to tiny imperfections of the lens. Keep in mind this is super-super-super zoom. ;)

Yeah, they probably took four images and stuck them together. It's not exactly uncommon.

Wow Keith, that's very interesting, looks like others have found 'seams' as well: http://www.cosmicastronomy.com/hubble1.htm, where are you getting these 6200px images from? I'd love to browse 'em.

Keep up the amateur astronomy :D

So those patterns appeared after you ran the noise reduction filter?  Maybe that's the way the noise reduction algorithm works?

Lots of possibilities.  As Eiii suggested, it could be something with the camera - perhaps light light refracting off of the crystal structure itself.  Were the source images compressed?  It could be caused by the compression algorithm.  Light is also impacted by gravity, so there could be some funky things going on there.  I doubt that would cause the grid-like pattern, though.  I'm leaning more toward the camera.  It could be even the way the light sensor works.

In any case, it really is thought provoking... makes us seem rather small and insignificant.

It's definitely not the filter.
If you look really close and switch between images you can see the pattern is there in the original, just not very visible.

Also, it really looks as if the pattern is behind the bright galaxies, but that could be an obstacle illusion.
