Robot Wars / Battle Bots
« on: November 12, 2007, 02:32:16 AM »
Got any good clips?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=S-uaBnWCliU - they beat up the house robots and the ref falls in the pit, haha.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xEvV-BpXmQ&NR=1 - razer is crazy - can ever crush house robots.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=LLUTvHE-dRU - hypno-disc can tear stuff up, too.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=cWtbjmoaaGE - gravity flips the house robots

I'd love to compete in something like that.

I remember a few years ago I was real interested in building a battlebot, but at the time the price of all the servos* and other hardware would have been far more than I could afford.  If I had the time I'd love to put one of these together.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2YKnrj01Ra8 - warhead is such a cool looking robot.  I love the tail.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wodfZLY_NIY - razer vs tornado - quite a fight.  Too bad the video quality sucks.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6NNY1_MoAjw - and that's what happens when tornado doesn't have its protective cage.

Edit: Er... why did this get deleted?

Building a 'bot only out of servos would be pretty darn tough.

FIRST/MATE ftw. :D

EDIT: Okay, more content. What turns me off about those competitions is just the fact that it seems to me that a lot of the bots are more flashy than they are functional; hell, I'd bet a simple robot with all it's allowed weight being put into speed, power, and armor could win without any weaponry at all.

FIRST has lot of aggression with the more recent games, without all the robot-destroying. Unfortunately, it's near-impossible to organize teams efficiently, so each match seems to come down to whether or not each team has a bot to fill each role, or if they can do their jobs really, really well.
Hell, one year we just built a robot that could move and deploy itself as a ramp. Not a lot for us to do for the first few minutes of a match, but we won about three quarters of our matches because we were able to do our ramp thing. (That makes no sense if you don't know the game.)

Now I'm all off-topic. Anyway, robotics competitions are hard to do well. Solo and non-popularized is the way to go.

Probably not against the likes of razer.  That thing chews through just about anything.

Heh, I wish I knew about FIRST when I was in high school.  We did do something for our CS/Tech class, in which we built 'battle bots' unforunately due to some loose rules, the team that won ended up being a swastika shaped spinning robot :P

Too bad you weren't prepared with a spinning star of david to counter it.

On a serious note, I'd be curious to see how a battle between two good spinners would turn out.

Diotor was awesome. I used to absolutely love Robot Wars, got so many episodes on tape.

My favourite were Onslaught, Behemoth, Razer (of course) Hypnodisc, Panic Attack and Chaos 2 (Obviously). I remember being really sad when Firestorm II beat Panic Attack. Stupid flipper.

Anybody remember the episode when Razer took out Sgt Bash, single handedly. That was cool. Oh, and when Hypnodisc (Needs verification) broke one of Matilda's tusks.

Awesomeness

On another note, did/does anybody watched/watch Scrapheap Challenge/Junkyard Wars? Probably one of my favourite TV shows ever. Proper Job

Yes but it just isn't the same.....

All of those robot wars/battlebots were shot on Angel Island in San Francisco at an old military base.

Does anyone remember which bot it was in Robot Wars that dumped Sir Killalot into the pit?

 Iremember that episode.

That bot took on 2 of the house robots after eliminating his competition.
