Fov?
« on: December 28, 2007, 02:59:49 PM »
Hi i'm wondering about fov's. I use the default and I have for a while, but ive noticed in some demos people's vision do look weird due to fov, but I've never actually realized it. I have a hard time playing on anything other than fov 90 or 100.

Can someone tell me what fov does for a players and what the point of having it is?

The higher the number is the more you can see. Most players user from 110 to 130. But then there are those oddballs that use stuff like 160. Me personally I use 120. I guess it just depends on where you are comfortable.

As far as having a hard time playing on something different, that is not unusual it will take you some time to get used to.

P.S. Hi2u as well.

I really can't recommend anything for any person. Just try different ones out until you find one that you really like. If I had to suggest something I would say try that 110-130 range.

It also very much depends on your pball screen resolution. I use a smallish resolution and have my fov at 112. But spook for example, uses a different resolution and a higher fov but we get similar views.

Well, for the record my Fov is at 125, and I took it right from Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory since that is the FOV i used there.

Edit: I tried 160 a while ago when I heard spook used it, and thought it would make me a better jumper.  *n00b moment

I started going by 10's from 90 and would use it for a day or two, then up it and repeat the process, I felt confortable ending up at 125, since 130 was a little too much and I wanted something more than 120...

I think scaling it and testing gets you used to your end result quicker too, because I used to think 120 no way!, but now I like it that I'm used to it...

I went to 95 at first and didn't like it. I use 120 now and my jump timing is a lot better. I didn't do the progression adjustment and just jumped from 90 to 120. Took a day or 2 to fully adjust.

Alright, lets keep personal flaming to a minimum. Don't forget this topic was for FOV.

I seriously suggest FOV 125, because you can see much more, but not too much that it distorts the picture.  Distorting the picture too much is really bad because then, I at least, find it hard to judge where I am.

"Seeing more" comes at a cost, though.  Distant items become much smaller, so it's a lot harder to see things like paint flying, etc.

When I first started i was using the default fov, thus jumping badly. Then I decided to go higher to fov 105, and my jumping skillz vastley improved.Plus I could see more, but still I could see distant things because it's  a low fov.It also improved my aiming.

I'm so used to using 110 that using 90 makes me dizzy.

Shockk, remember this rule as well when selecting an FOV:

The larger the FOV, the faster you will seem to be going, because for objects to change there position on the screen in relation to you, they have to move more in the same amount of time as they would for a lower FOV, and thus, depending on how you think, either you or your surroundings will be moving faster.
