Did you know: Our Galaxy is being INVADED...
« on: January 04, 2008, 10:12:17 AM »
First a little background information:
Quote
The disk of the Milky Way galaxy is about 100,000 light years in diameter (one light year is about 9.5 x 1015 meters), but only about 1000 light years thick.

Our Galaxy contains about 200 billion stars. Most of the stars are located in the disk of our galaxy, which is the site of most of the star formation because it contains lots of gas and dust.

Quote
It takes the Solar System about 225–250 million years to complete one orbit of the galaxy (a galactic year), so it is thought to have completed 20–25 orbits during the lifetime of the Sun and 1/1250th of a revolution since the origin of humans. The orbital speed of the solar system about the center of the Galaxy is approximately 220 km/s. At this speed, it takes around 1400 years for the solar system to travel a distance of 1 light-year, or 8 days to travel 1 AU (AU = the distance from the Earth to the Sun).

Also...
To gain a better perspective on the size of our galaxy, if you were to place a CD on the ground, that would represent our solar system, and the diameter of the earth would represent the milky way galaxy.

So with that out of the way...

Quote
Explanation:  Our Galaxy is being invaded. Recent observations indicate that in the next 100 million years, the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy will move though the disk of our own Milky Way Galaxy  yet again . The Sagittarius Dwarf (Sgr), shown as the extended irregular shape below the Galactic Center, is the closest of 9 known small dwarf spheroidal galaxies that orbit our Galaxy. Don't worry, our Galaxy is not in danger, but no such assurances are issued for the Sagittarius Dwarf: the intense gravitational tidal forces might pull it apart. Oddly, however, Sgr's orbit indicates that is has been through our Galaxy several times before, and survived! One possibility is that Sgr contains a great deal of low-density dark matter that hold it together gravitationally during these collisions.

I love reading about this stuff, I'm reading this right now: http://www.solstation.com/x-objects/sag-deg.htm and about to browse the SDSS images.  It's so hard to fathom how large this universe is, it's impossible to put anything in perspective...

Saw something on the TV about the merging of galaxies and excrement, wonder how it'll effect everyone. I KNOW GOD WILL PROTECT US!

Are we alone in this universe?
You tell me.

When a pinpoint of the sky reveals 50,000 galaxies that contain billions of stars each, I would be willing to bet we are not alone, or even close to it. Considering we are statistically not alone with the confines of our own multi-billion star galaxy, when looking at the big picture you just have to smile. We are very small.

Several hundred images taken with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have been woven together into a rich tapestry of at least 50,000 galaxies.

I love the thoughts about space, and what other things may look like. That's why my desktop is an abstract view of other planets. It just fascinates me.

Quite honestly, this is too big for me to care about. Just like many things are too small for me to care about! Guess I like to be aware of a world of things that affect me.

Puny earthlings!
Problem solved.

btw sometimes I like spending time in bed thinking about the size of the universe and similiar stuff. It's fascinating. A year ago i saw i documentary on "ZDF", a german tv channel, which was showing a very impressive example of how big the universe could be. I'm a bit sad i can't remember much of it. I had only seen the end of the documentary. Maybe it's on the internet somewhere. Would be nice if it is.
