Tweak: Specifiying console commands
« on: January 05, 2008, 06:17:41 PM »
Okay, this one actually needs explanation. I really think there should be a character that will cause lines entered into the console to be treated as commands only- probably '/'. Just so someone doesn't type 'loyin password' and let everyone in the server know what the password is. Typing '/loyin password' would result in an 'Unknown Command' message, instead of broadcasting the mistyped command to everyone.

Adding a slash to the beginning of a console command is exactly the same as not adding the slash, as far as I can tell. Typing '/bleh' still makes you say 'bleh'.

This may be difficult to implement without some major changes in the command system (or disabling chat at the console completely).  I know I never use the / for commands, so if I made a typo, it would still go through.

Edit: Actually, now that I think about it, what you're saying is impossible without disabling console chat.  Perhaps a better vote would be to have a separate chat console and command console.

Removing console-chat is another way to do this, but I chat via the console too much when I'm dead, so that's not an ideal solution. ;)

A console dedicated to chat seems like overkill to me. Disabling console chat is the way to go, then.

Actually, this is something I'd like to have at some point, so you could see just the chat without eliminations and other crap getting in the way.

What would be cool is to have a more window-oriented GUI, or maybe something like MMORPG games have, with different tabs.  In one tab, you can type commands and see game events.  In another, you can chat.

I think it's perfect the way it is.

If you're going to change it, I think the chat should stay where it is and the other messages should appear at the bottom.

I'd probably leave the messages alone, just split them up when you bring the console down.

But anyway, that's a different topic.
