Surface-specific sounds

Certain surfaces have their own sounds (ie. impact of paintball/player steps on metal vs. grass).

In the last builds we have some surface specific footsteps and splat sounds. At the moment the splat sound comes only, if a player shoots at a barrel for example. But should it come, if a paint grenade explode in the near of a barrel or not? How easy/hard would it be to implement it?
