Sure, but what about the function?

Perhaps what you're requesting is an auto-updater?  It's been a while since I've looked at it, but I think the new version notification links you to the web page where you can download the files.  The problem with an auto-updater is providing the bandwidth.  Also, if somebody found an exploit, it could potentially auto-update to a worm/virus or something crazy like that.
