Question: Two DSL modems on one line?
« on: January 12, 2008, 01:48:11 PM »
I'm moving about 100 yards from my old house and we will both have the same phone/dsl line. Right now there is a router/modem(all in one) in the old house. Now we ran that same phone line out to the new house, and I want to use that internet. I rather not use a wireless connection either. Is it possible to just connect another modem into the line in the new house, if so what else needs to be done?

Sorry but there can only be on dsl modem per activated line. That's just the way the electronics work in the dslam.

You can get another router, and set it up as a repeater.  But that would require some in-depth configuration.

Do I have any other options besides running ethernet cable out there or going wireless?

And 100 yards of wireless would be expensive/difficult.

Actually you could do 100 yards of wireless for under $200.00.  Set up an access point at the first house with a directional antenna and another one wit ha directional antenna at the new house.

Now I had someone on another forum say that you can put an ethernet end on your phone line coming out of the wall. Is this true? Also if I go wireless what will my download speeds and connectivity be like.

Yes, but I wouldn't recommend it.

A regular Ethernet plug would not fit a phone line jack. The converse works, though, as long as the Ethernet line is not actually connected to anything live.

It terms of wireless, the max speed for 802.11g wireless is 54 Mbit/sec (b is 11), but that's in ideal conditions. Connectivity all depends on what equipment you use and how you set it up. I'd really suggest running ethernet.

I think he means cutting off the end, and putting an Ethernet plug on it.

On a normal Ethernet wire, only four are used.  I know cuz I've made a bunch.
