Feature: Work submissions subforum
« on: January 19, 2008, 05:34:03 PM »
Say someone wants a feature a lot, and while there is no reason it shouldn't be done, it's just not top priority for jitspoe to code. How about a forum, where people can post their code edits/submissions to jitspoe so he can review/add them.

Pros:
  • More features implemented quicker
  • If you want something then you can do it

Cons:
  • Code must be checked for bugs/exploits
  • Arguing over code-ownership/credits

Depends on: Split code into multiple libraries

I trust you to come up with more pros/cons.

(1) You can just post the code already anyway
(2) There will be very few people who will want to and be able to contribute just because there is a forum

Personally, I want to post the per-client sending code I worked on after I go through it again some time, but I could just post that in this forum.

Really, it looks like you want jitspoe to look at code submitted to him, but I don't think he has ever stated that he did not want to see code from the community. Ya don't need a forum to send jit a PM or post a new thread about code.

This feature I think also depends on the passing of the Breaking up the Game Code into Multiple Open sourced Libraries (link in my sig).  With the coding that is open source now, most people I don't believe can do much with it.  I support this 100% thou.

Well, I wasn't referring to the fact that not much of the game is modifiable in the first place, but that most people don't know C at all.

I don't know C. :P I've read tutorials occasionally through the years, but I've put little to practice, so it was almost like I never read it in the first place (though some of the basics do stick).

I don't know C# either, although the same thing goes. Read tutorials. :P

What did you write the Feature Vote thing in?  PHP?

I knew you were good at something.  PHP could be helpful in some areas thou.  The feature vote system is very useful and that type of submission fits in this category

Didn't see that part.  I explained it better for you though. ;)

There's already a general development forum.  Code submissions are few and far between.  I'm not sure why we'd need a subforum for something that has only been done like 2 or 3 times.

If people knew there was a specific place to actually post it, then maybe more people would make something.
