It has the advantage of most of the US pinging Well, as opposed to East coast pinging great and Europe pinging decently.

Pretty good for me (east europe). I pinged low 150's. Comparing with GT (high 180's) and er33ts (about same as GT) it is pretty sexy!

What exactly did you do to make your own server at home. What exactly do you need? I know the basics but not enough to actually build one.
