May the faq should be on the front page.  There is a topic about "how do you move really fast and jump high?" at least once a month.
The news section could be on the side.

Maybe a new banner will get the idea across.  A nice, flashy look banner with all the basic information about DP in a banner will attract attention better then a message.  Most people like to look at pictures vs. read.
As the old saying goes: A picture is worth a thousand words

Maybe a community contest would be good.  There are many skilled graphic designers that surf the forums.
