Rendering Bump Maps
« on: March 20, 2008, 08:57:27 AM »
While filter forge is pretty cool, the bump maps don't cast shadows.  This makes it very difficult to generate convincing looking rock textures and whatnot.  I figured maybe I could take the bump map generated by Filter Forge and render it in something else.  I dusted off POV-Ray - something I played with way back in the day - since I remembered it could render bump maps.  Unfortunately, it, too, failed to cast shadows.  Does anybody know of a free rendering program that will render a bump map with shadows (and look good)?

I'm %100 sure Blender could do that. Either using a normal or displacement map.

Displacement map sounds like what I'd want, but is  blender's renderer any good?  I always thought it was more of a modeling tool than a renderer.

It's certainly good enough for generating textures. At worst, you can use Yafray.

EDIT: Everything in this gallery that isn't classified under 'External Renderers' uses blender's internal.

What context do you want this for?  Are you rendering a scene, or rendering/making bump maps?

As a .jpg?  Or implement something in the game code?

It sounds like he's just trying to render a texture + bumpmap + lighting to an image. For textures.

Ok.  If you set it up correctly you could get that to work in Blender.  I'd be a pain to setup, but once it is setup you would be able to save it as a "template", if you will.
