Battle of the 64-bit OSes
« on: May 24, 2008, 03:56:49 AM »
Well I'm getting a new computer now I've done my exams, but both my XP home licenses have already been used more than once, and wouldn't work anyway because it's completely different hardware. Now, I want to get the most out of the 64 bit processor for gaming, so I want a 64-bit Windows OS.

So, which should I get? I can get XP Pro 64, but that costs £100, and would bring the total up to £450. I could get vista home basic 64 to take it up to £400, but vista is dodgy all-round. I don't really want to get Vista Home Premium or whatever because of all the extra added crap I don't want for extra money.

Does anyone have experience with either or can recommend one?

Oh, I didn't think they had Vista Home Basic in 64bit. But my opinion is, why have 64bit and not plan to flourish it with a fancy OS, and all the extra fancy stuff ;)

If you were going to get a better version of Vista, I would have said Vista, but since its these 2 options, I'll say stick with XP Pro.

Better look to see what drivers are available for your hardware in 64 bit for both XP and Vista and go that route.

I would recommend saving up money or summat adn wait until you have some more money and buy a better Vista, as good Vistas are pretty good, plus in the long term with a good Vista you wont nneed to upgrade for a reasonably long time.

I have Vista Ultimate 64bit. The most drivers are aviable now.

Look at the "SystemBuilder" versions of vista. Its the same vista as the normal one, but without support and documentation. In germany that version of vista home basic costs 70 € (~ 56 £ ???).

That's the one I'm looking at, £53.

70.00 EUR = 55.7441 GBP lol. the system builder versions dont have a great rating compared to the normal versions.

Hint: For now, 64bit OSes won't improve performance or anything.

Not even on 64-bit applications?
