Ventrilo Bandwidth
« on: July 06, 2008, 08:59:43 PM »
Just a couple of days ago I got shown the Bandwidth Usage from my Dad.  Its just been going up and up and its pretty much dead even with the days that go past.  I gave Paintball a go for 10 minutes and it used up about 6mb.  So that wasn't really the problem.  So then I started doing research on Ventrilo and found that alot of people had been noticing that it uses up heaps of bandwidth.  Does anyone know quality of the sound transferred?  For both 2.1.4 and 3.0.1.  My dad has a feeling its over 16kb/s (kilobits).

from the server requirements, it shows a max of 8kbps per stream so I would go with that.

you can check for yourself in the settings, see what youre using for a codec. the data rate should be next to the codecs name.

just gotta say, so intercoursein glad we dont have that system of pay per usage in the US, yet........

Out of interest, how strict is your tarriff that a 16kbps stream would be a problem?

I don't think too many pay-as-you-go tariffs are too popular with regular internet users here in the UK, mostly we have to contend with ridiculous traffic shaping, stunningly vague 'fair use' policies and usage caps (mines 40gb a month).

i realized shortly after i made the post that its prob not even a continuos transfer. i believe there is only data flowing when you/others talk, along with w/e tcp headers and net control packets. one interesting point that im not too sure on is whether each player is riding their own stream or whether its simply mixdown to one stream at the server.

at the end of the day, like dagless has mentioned, its pretty minimal usage of bandwith. cut the porn activity to lessen your bill./
