The news media was hilarious leading up to the test fire. Saying that it could create a black hole and end the world.
Really, if there was any chance of that, there would have been no funding for such a monumental project.

Also, you are right, the actual test doesn't happen for a few weeks, but there was that speculation that even just turning it on could create a black hole.

Whenever they get the atom going as fast as they want it, which they said could take a couple of weeks to do.

If there is a big bang, I guess there is for you.  I enjoy living here, nothing to worry about.  Rarely any natural disasters.  But still, even if they do manage to make a black hole, it won't be able to feed off anything, plus it will be way to small.  At least I don't have a science teacher that goes all "ZOMG, LETS WATCH IT" and all this excrement.

Errm, those scientists from CERN keep telling it's a natural process which happens often. They reason that if black holes would really be created the world would've already been destroyed.

Linky?  I can't find anything bout it, unless I suck at searching.

they had a transformer fail and had to shut down the whole experiement last i heard but i don't think it was a big issue and it should be up and running again shortly something to deal with it overcooling or undercooling in kelvin

Gillies said the sector that was damaged will have to be warmed up well above the absolute zero temperature used for operations so that repairs can be made—a time-consuming process.

"A number of magnets raised their temperature by around 100 degrees," Gillies said. "We have now to warm up the whole sector in a controlled manner before we can actually go in and repair it."

[...]

He said it would take "several weeks minimum" to warm up the sector.

I think it will take a while to get it fixed.  :P

Cern/Umbrella corp is the first thing i thought of when i heard the company name. I just wonder if all the money they put into trying to figure out how we got here. Was transfored to a greener tommorrow would it make a difference? Preparing for our limited petroleum future instead of unraveling the past? Just a thought.
