No, there are special places designated for gymnastics, kayak/canoe, shooting, basketball, etc.

The Bird's Nest is for soccer I think.

Tell you the truth, the Bird's Nest is actually specially designed to cooperate with Zhang Yi-Mou's (the director) ideas for the opening/closing ceremonies.

Well NBC botched the opening ceremonies.

All of the countries came out in alphabetical order, but NBC edited the vids and changed the order/

...No? According to just about every source I can find, they did not at all come out in alphabetical order. NBC pretty explicitly explained why it wasn't in alphabetical order. Are you kidding? >_>
EDIT: Oh, the slashdot article. I saw the TV broadcast, and the wikipedia article seems to be about what happened there.

They came out in the slant of the first character in the Chinese translation of the Country name order (after Greece).
