Crash to desktop
« on: August 11, 2008, 07:42:28 AM »
I just got my new computer with Vista home premium (32 bit) and an ATI radeon HD 4870 video card.

I downloaded the build 23 full standalone and installed it as i did with my old computer. I opened it, and if I open any map or any server paintball 2 freezes and after a while crashes to the desktop. The only error message I get is "Paintball 2 stopped working".

Any ideas? I didn't find anything similar searching.

Did you check your event log for error messages?

ATI cards have been known to be issues with DP, add in Vista and you probably have a driver issue.

Surprisingly, I didn't have any problem running Paintball2 on Vista with my new laptop.

But I have an nVidia card.

Cameron is too evil.

I checked the event log:

   paintball2.exe
   0.0.0.0
   483ca3d1
   atioglxx.dll
   6.14.10.7769
   486d907f
   c0000005
   0003e1b2
   a45c
   01c8fc37f2125660

I don't really understand what that means, maybe someone else knows?

Hmh, I thought I installed them already.
So I just delete the old ones (uhm, how can I make sure they _really_ are deleted?) and install the new ones which I download from the net?

Vista hates DP, and wants you not to play. Curse you Mircosoft!

Sounds like a driver issue.  Is it crashing immediately when you load it?  Perhaps you need to install older drivers.  If you ever get ATI drivers that work, don't touch them.  ATI constantly breaks their drivers.

It doesn't crash when I am using the menus and stuff - but when I enter a server, the game freezes after 2 seconds. Then after a while it crashes.
Does someone know which drivers should I install then?
It's kind of weird - other games like battlefield 2 and crysis work fine without errors on my new computer.

EDIT: I just tested once more, I tested midnight 2 and it worked for 2 minutes or at least longer than before. Then it crashed, just like usually.

EDIT 2: Great, it seems to work now. I had the version 8.7 of the drivers, the newest version ( 8.8 ) just came out and I downloaded it. I installed it and now it works - thank you all for helping with this :)

@Cameron, I said it would work :D

Do I care if they stopped selling it?  I know what I'm talking about....  How do you think I bought another 3 license codes for it then?  Explain that.
