2008 Post your Computer rig thread.
« on: September 22, 2008, 04:32:10 PM »
Well since I recently purchased a new computer using my summer paychecks, I'd like to see if anyone else has done some drastic improvements on their systems.

Right now my systems stands like so:

Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q9450 @ 3.65 Ghz (2.66 stock) (Socket 775) (456MHz FSB)
Motherboard: XFX 780i 3-way SLI board.
RAM: 8 GB Corsair 4x2 GB @1066 mhz
Video card(s) 3x 9800 GTX's @ 800 mhz core clock (675 stock)
Power supply: Coolmax 1200 Watt power supply
Case: Thermaltake Black Kandalf LCS

The processor is water cooled, it's a low-end water system but it keeps CPU temps under 60 on full load. I may have gone a bit overboard, but all this cost me under $2000 so I was happy =]

This thing is a brick, and built tough, case is made of steel, and overall the computer weighs in at about 75 lbs. Good lifting for when I go to LAN's

Pics:
And I'm positive you guys can figure out I did my cable management after I finished building it. *cough*

whoa, triple SLI... can you tell a noticeable difference?

My desktop PC (running XP) has:
Processor: AMD Athlon64 4000+ @ 2.7 GHz (2.4 stock) (Socket 939)
Mobo: Abit KN8 V1.1
RAM: 2x512MB Corsair ValueSelect DDR400 w/ CAS 2.5
Video Card: 1x Sapphire Radeon X1650 Pro with Dual DVI
PSU: Thermaltake 430W (TR2 W0070)
Case: Kingwin SK-523 BW

sad in comparison, i know... i have limited resources tho :-\
no pics atm... sorry

While I was doing benchmarking with the video cards using 3dmark06 I noted that I got around 30 fps in the first test with one card, about 70 with 2 cards, and now I get over 100 with 3 cards. Not a noticeable difference, but it's nice to play crysis on very high with no problems whatsoever.

Didn't know there was an 8600 1 gb card, I feel bad for building my mom a computer that had the 256 version of the 8600 :P

I could never ever bring myself to do water cooling, unless it was with a non-conductive liquid. Even then, I'd be really hesitant.
Anyway,

AMD64 2.0GHz x2, 8800GT, 2GB RAM. That's all I know by heart.

I overclocked my processor to 3.65 Ghz and the temps stay at the low 40's range under slight load. (Playing crysis only puts the CPU at 20%, gotta love the quad.)

Earlier today, I overclocked my brothers computer, which is a twin computer to mine minus the water cooling. I can only get his up to 3.2 and his temps are idling around the upper 50's and are in the mid 70's range under full load.

Water cooling definitely has its advantages over air when overclocking. The cpu fan is an upgraded one in my brothers computer also, not the cheap flimsy thing that comes with these Q9450's
