The second GlobalGamers Mapping Contest!
« on: October 11, 2008, 12:00:08 PM »
As celebration of the second anniversary of the launch of the GlobalGamers IRC Network, GG will be hosting a mapping contest for Digital Paintball 2.

Rules of competition:

1. Maps must be submitted no later than 6pm on the 11th of November, GMT.
2. Any maps submitted must have been started after this announcement was made.
3. Map remakes are allowed, as long as all brushwork is original. This can and will be checked with .map source or a decompiler.
4. You may enter as many different maps as you like.
5. You may map in teams.
6. Custom textures, models and sound effects are permitted as long as they are under the GPL license.
7. Your map must be somehow related to the theme.
E.g. if the theme was Military, you could have make hangars, a munitions factory, barracks, a nuke silo or any other military installation.

The theme for this competition is "Space".

There will be 3 judges for the contest. They will vote on Aesthetics, Gameplay and Technique.
If you are interested in judging, please post a reply to this thread. Judges are excluded from entering maps. Hopefully we can reduce the delay between submission and results that there was last time.

Now, get mapping!

Edit: Prizes TBA, probably similar to last time :-)

If school+work permits it, I'll give it a try. Or, at least come up with a clever way to get DirtyTaco to do it for me.

Is any game mode fine? I'd be more apt to try a Siege map than CTF (just because I don't enjoy copy/pasting a base and mirroring it, although there's always the TF2 approach of changing aesthetics up a bit to make it not seem so symmetric). Of course, if the judges are more likely to favor the gameplay of CTF maps, this is a bad idea.

Are map remakes supposed to be maps we've made in the past, or can they be remakes of maps from other games?

I would actually go and join this competition, but I need to figure out what is wrong with my 3D view in BSP.

IronFist: Any gamemode is fine. Making maps from other games is allowed, as long as you don't decompile or otherwise convert the brushwork.

Webhead: Sod off!

musickid999: Spook had a problem with his 3d view, i'm not sure if it is the same as yours but have a look around for the thread.

I could be one of the three judges if you don't find anyone better than me. I haven't released a map yet because I'm always too lazy to finish them but still I know how to map and I know when a map looks good and has a good gameplay. Also, I have (too) much time to be online.
I hope you choose me :P

I'll apply as a judge as well.  I like playtesting maps thoroughly and I'm pretty good at remembering details as well. Although I haven't touched BSP in the last 2-3 years, I still know stuff about mapping and I'm pretty sure I could give objective input on the maps' quality.

Cool, I thought it would take more time to decide the three judges. Well, I'm happy with that :P

Me too.

Quick question though, when you say 'Your map must be somehow related to the theme', could someone get away with, say, a remake of The Brothahood Cosmic Club by SinisterMinister (cosmic3.bsp)

...:P

A few questions:

1. Can I submit a "polished beta" ?  I feel rushed and I do not want to finish a map for the sake of the contest.  I would like to finish 95% of the map, but still leave it in beta so that it can be improved over more time after this contest.

2. I am doing a map remake of a map not originally part of the DP world.  Is this allowed?

The judges will mark what you have submitted by the deadline - it is up to you if its the final release or not.

Alright.  Because my entry will most likely be a very polished beta :)
