He has a good amount of RAM for DP at least.  My laptop has 512MB and can play DP fine.  It's probably more his processor which is considerably more expensive and more board specific to replace which will screw you in the end.  A new video card would probably be your best bet to improve without spending too much money.  A nice $40-70 Nvidia should do fine.

Question. I just found some updates for my computer. It says that there's about 6 updates for software, and 6 updates for hardware. (no clue what this means) and no priority updates needed. Will any of these software/hardware updates make it not lag? xD

Not sure if this helps but these are some of the updates:

Updates I installed:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB928416)
Group Policy Preference Client Side Extensions for Windows XP (KB943729)
VIA Technologies, Inc. - Sound - Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)
AMYUNI Technologies - Printing - Amyuni Document Converter 2.51
February 2007 CardSpace Update for Windows XP (KB925720)
VIA/S3G - Video - VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP
Marvell - Networking - Wireless-N USB Network Adapter
Advanced Micro Devices - Other Hardware - AMD Processor
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (KB929300) (x86)
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 6.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954459)

Updates I haven't installed:

Update for .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB932471)
Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB940157)]
Root Certificates Update

Look,

If you turn down the detail levels and try using the stock textures (uncheck hr textures in setup) I bet that will fix your problem.

I routinely play DP on a p3-650 with 256m of ram and 16 meg vid card with no issues.

I jsut dont run hr textures or the highest detail levels.

Thanks Knack. I unchecked the hr textures in setup. Do I lessen the texture quality?

Edit:

Yay. Lag is gone! :P but another problem came up.. D:

After about 5 minutes, paintball freezes and I have to shut down the computer. Now it used to only do that with full screen mode and it would lag without full screen. Now that the lag is gone, it freezes, even when I'm not on full screen mode. =/

Anything I can do?

ya, update your computer. i don't know if downgrading a version of pb would help any wait and see what knack says.

Nothing on the lagging computer. Since I can't use it for paintball. Whenever I go on to test I don't have anything else open. xD

do you have any type of messanger running in the background are anything like that, if so close it because even know its minimized and stuff it still takes up memory and that sounds like that you need more of.

Thats not gonna really solve the problem.
Go to the task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and go to processes (when running pball). Click on memory twice so it dorts low to high. Tell us the first 5 things on the list and the amount of memory they are using.

Uhh, make it the other way round, so the bigger numbers are up the top, those ones are just really small and don't help :P (when your running pball again).  Then repaste that, and also down the bottom of task manager, tell us your commit charge, while running pball as well.

A screen shot would be great.  One with cpu usage largest to smallest and one with memory largest to smallest.

i thought so..pirate said low to high so i wasnt sure.

And I can't upload the screenshots for anything. I use paint to paste the screenshot but the forums isn't letting me pull it up. It says its too big even when I cropped it.

Ugh I spent over an hour trying to upload this. Not working =/

Here's the info:

paintball2.exe 29,244 K
svchost.exe 15,196 K
explorer.exe 12,056 K
APPSvC32.exe 5,936 K
taskmgr.exe 4,968

Computer Usage: 100%
Commit Charge: 535M/1154M
PF Usage: 535 MB

hope that helps :P

Yep it's the processor.  Not much you can do about that without getting a new video card or a new processor.

Yep it's the processor.  Not much you can do about that without getting a new video card or a new processor.

Q2 uses as many CPU cycles as it can by default. I am pretty sure DP does, also (cl_sleep can reduce this). 100% usage is not indicative of a poor CPU.

KI3S, hopefully DirectX is installed. Go to start>run>"cmd" and enter "dxdiag". You can then click the "save all information" button to save a .txt that you can upload. This will contain system specs, including video card specs.

I don't think it's possible to determine your problem in this thread if it involves freezing. The best generic advice is "reinstall windows", and if it keeping happening, you should suspect a hardware problem (overheating of the CPU is suspect).

To see if it's just hardware related, you can try 3D overclocking utilities like ATITool, which can be used to put the card through a stress test (ATITool just displays a furry rotating cube which gets my card really hot). If your system freezes, then your video chipset is probably overheating.

You can max out the CPU with something other than DP using prime95. If it crashes, you can be sure you have a processor heating problem.

Whats the point of closing explorer, then having to re-start it do basically do everything once you leave the game?  You only kill and re-start it when it crashes.
