Larger Textures
« on: December 23, 2008, 10:28:50 PM »
You know when looking at a large brush you can tell that the texture keeps repeating over and over again. It makes a level with large, flat brushes look wierd. The textures should be bigger so it doesn't look so wierd.

There's already a project going to increase texture resolution, though that's not what you're asking about-- just adding in bigger textures could drastically increase the amount of memory needed to run some maps. All in all, this game doesn't look fantastic, and it probably won't get much better. If you don't like how a texture in part of your map tiles, make your own or rework the area so that it suits your tastes.

I did that once and got a modified files warning. And you're right, I guess.

Yeah, you can't mess with existing textures.

You just can't mess with the files. Anyways this is the second time you've replied to my topics. What's up with that?

Woah, members of the forums replying to topics on the forums? Weird. Someone should look into that.

I know. It's very wierd. I'm new so don't expect me to know everything. But anyways look at my profile and if you have a WiFi game listed I will play you sometime. And maybe we should then move this to a different board if you want to.

That's always going to be a problem - the trick is to not have large brushes with a single texture.  Unfortunately, many maps are poorly built and have like one huge, flat wall with a rock texture on every side.  Memory is a limited resource, so it's not really a good idea to have massive textures, unless you want the game to be like 5 gigs and require 1 gig of video memory.

Yes you're right but maybe just a little bigger. And why would servers run maps even like the ones you mentioned?

Notice he said unfortunately many maps are poorly built. That means that the map is crappy and the server shouldn't run those maps.

That's right, they shouldn't be running those maps.  But unfortunately I don't have any admin over those servers.  And the people that do only run the popular maps, which happen to be crappy.

Believe me, I hate most of the pub servers.  Why do you think nobody ever sees me ingame?  All the servers (that have someone playing) are running maps like a shazam or blitz or some similarly terrible map.

While most maps are crappy a few are fun. I think some maps rule over the rest when it's fun. So maybe that's why poorly constructed levels are popular.
