The Daemon, by Daniel Suarez
« on: January 20, 2009, 05:56:57 AM »
I just picked this book up at Barnes and Noble after reading three of the first four chapters made available for free online.

Here are first four chapters for free: http://www.ethicalhacker.net/images/stories/features/books/daemon/daemon01.html

The book's site:
http://www.thedaemon.com/

I'm on chapter 18, or so, so far, and I can tell you this book is very good. If you're a techie/gamer you should check this out. It's been praise for its technical accuracy, and its "this could really happen" value.

“How can you have no idea where it’s coming from? Just use a packet sniffer.”

“That is what I am saying, Jon: the source of the traffic is being masked somehow.”

“Try a passive sniffer.”

“It is invisible to both active and passive sniffers.”

I guess to have it say...

"He loaded the packet sniffer hoping there was no other traffic but what he was looking for or else he was going to have to spend half an eternity wading through nonsense packets looking for just the right packet only to find out it was only a similar looking packet and continued to wade through even more packets till he smashed his head on the keyboard luckily selecting the exact right packet with this violent action....and then he had to decrypt it...but wait...how did he know it was the right packet unless he decrypted it first which means he has to decrypt aall the packets in order to even start to wade through the decrypted packets and hopefully luckily stumble upon the right packet"

Would be a little too real for books and movies.

I love that Penny Arcade strip! I wish I could enjoy thrillers like this, but ignorance really is bliss - reading that first chapter I was exactly like Tycho in the comic.

I know a couple of regulars here are network admins and such, I've got a question for you - do you ever name your servers with such dramatic names as 'Icarus-Seven'? I might go out of my way to think up the most exciting names for the most boring servers when I get the opportunity to name them, something like the Diablo II-esque 'DemonburnTheImmolator_6'. Then I'd tell people that if you tracert it, one of the hops actually resolves to Hell.

I worked at one place where the servers were named after Roman Gods. Another place, the 7 dwarves.

Classic.

Also, look up the port that id used for the original d00m: 666

Or Santa's reindeer

bingo

My boss wasn't too happy, but got over it, and actually like it after a while.

He wanted to go with his old naming convention; NTSRV01, NTSRV02, etc...
I thought that was boring.

* KnacK looks @ his alias list on his dns server and considers using Bond girls for server names (and maybe one or 2 from Austin Powers).....

Have I read better books, sure, but not in a while.
Granted the technology pieces, and continual explanations there of, where dumbed down for the laymen. This was fairly easy having a main character that was computer illiterate and needing continual explaining on all the technologies. Pretty much everything in the book is achievable with today's technology. You'd need a lot of time, money, and know how, and luck, but possible none the less. Apparently Daniel Suarez had a lot of knowledgeable techies advising him through the book
