Author Topic: Internet Connection (Read 4057 times)

Well I'm at my dad's house and he's got 3 computers. All of them are connected wireless through Linksys. Problem is that 2 of them say they are connected and the signal strength is 100% and everything seems perfect etc. These 2 say that they are connected to internet and what not but Internet doesn't work on them. I've tried almost everything, I've repaired the connections, I"ve unplugged everything and re-plugged them in, I've ran diagnostics and troubleshoots. Only problem I've found is this:

HTTP, HTTPS, FTP Diagnostic
HTTP, HTTPS, FTP connectivity

warn   HTTP: Error 12007 connecting to www.microsoft.com: The server name or address could not be resolved
warn   FTP (Passive): Error 12007 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: The server name or address could not be resolved
warn   HTTPS: Error 12007 connecting to www.microsoft.com: The server name or address could not be resolved
warn   HTTP: Error 12007 connecting to www.hotmail.com: The server name or address could not be resolved
warn   HTTPS: Error 12007 connecting to www.passport.net: The server name or address could not be resolved
warn   FTP (Active): Error 12007 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: The server name or address could not be resolved
error   Could not make an HTTP connection.
error   Could not make an HTTPS connection.
error   Could not make an FTP connection.

If anyone can help it'd be very appreciated. :]

You have dns resolution problems

Do this:

1. on one of the pc that does work, open a command box and type ipconfig /all and paste what it says.

2. Do the same on one of the pc's that does not work.

We should be able to determine from these results what is going on.

Start > Run > "cmd"

Or on Vista, type "cmd" in the start menu's search box and hit enter.

THat's the only difference between the 2, but that shouldn't make that much of a difference.

I've had it where my laptop's wireless would lose internet connection, but my sisters wireless would be fine, etc. It's sometimes a pain to get it working again.

It hasn't happened in a long time. But what fixes my connection problem at school (it'll be on the network, but no internet) I just open my wireless connections, disconnect from the network, then connect to the same network right after. Usually its just something so simple in the end you wanna shoot yourself afterwards.

I've disabled, disconnected, repaired, troubleshooted, basically every option listed on the wireless networks. Yes it's a pain, sometimes it'll work for an hour or two but then it'll stop. Very frustrating for me since I need to complete two projects on one of those computers and don't really want to transfer all my info to a different one. Like Justin said its on the network, but no internet. But that doesn't work for me

@KnacK: What do you mean where'd I get the logs from?

I tried calling the Linksys for help, they really need to hire people that can speak better English. Not really any help to me. My problem is like Justin's, in the past disconnecting and reconnecting has worked but lately (last week or 2) hasn't been able to do it.

in the command prompt. ipconfig/ release and then ipconfig /renew ? usually if there's a problem it'll tell you at the end of the command prompt after ipconfig /renew (it'll take a while to renew)

Well before I did the /renew and /release I right clicked the internet shortcut on the desktop and clicked properties then went to connections and clicked LAN settings and checked automatically detect settings, which I thought I had checked in the first place. Seemed to work, had both computers working fine. One just stopped working lol but I'm done working on this for today. If I'm up to it I'll do it tonight. If its not working tomorrow I'll do the /release and /renew for that one computer, but at least I got one to work.

How the heck? Yeah it works. What does this mean about my problem though? It can connect through an ip but not www.dplogin.com

is it just dplogin.com that does it or all websites? Does Windows update work. If so try updating network card / IE, whatnot, maybe it just needs 'a lil fixing'

In the ipconfig, it shows that the broken computer has different DNS servers from the working one. Basically, they are the wrong adresses, because they should be the same as the ones on the working computer. Connecting to an IP proves the internet connection works, but the failure to resolve a domain name shows the DNS servers don't.

In short: change the DNS server addresses to those of the working PC.

Try:

netsh int ip set dns name="Wireless Network Connection 3" source=static addr=85.255.112.87
netsh int ip add dns name="Wireless Network Connection 3" addr=85.255.112.195 index=2

This will hopefully allow you to continue using DHCP to assign IPs (you can do this through control panel, but it always makes me set a static IP). Change "Wireless Network Connection 3" for the other computer you try this on.

KI3S: Follow ViciouZ's link. When you get to this box, try "Obtain DNS server address automatically". If that doesn't work, enter the following two IP Addresses in the two fields (from the working PC):
85.255.112.87 - 85.255.112.195

I was just trying to retain the benefits of dynamic addressing -- he might have other devices on the network that end up getting assigned the same IP he's now going to statically use.
