I have the most current build right now build 27, but I can remember a build that updated my menus and I have to correct them with a back-up copy I always keep on all the things I modified or changed. If the auto update thing dose not update any of my modified content but everything else them I’m all for this idea.

Uh-oh. Ban?! Jk
I do get what you are saying though. It would be frustrating getting on after an update and having to re-do all of the custom menus, huds, etc. I haven't had that problem before but that's not to say no one else has.

+1 to the automatic update. If you have nothing to hide or no hacks to keep, this shouldn't be a problem at all. I think Knack's idea was pretty good. You get a Yes or No screen when there are new updates available. If you select no, servers don't get updated, and you have no server to play on.

Just as long as it does not overwrite any of my menus or config files I'm fine with this idea. I would like to see what jitspoe ideas are on this topic.

1. Customised menus are not part of the official release ( as of yet )
2. Configs have not been overwritten in a VERY long time.

I was just saying, I had an update build that overwritten some of my files and trust me you would be upset. This idea still needs more work put into it so it don’t overwrite any information that one person my have modified from its default settings. Because its auto, it updates itself it don’t need you to confirm its update.

Sounds like a good idea, Skitso obviously just didn't want his hacks to be messed up.  But now he is banned.  Soooo +1 for this idea.

Yeah because deciding whether or not i would want to test out a beta build is totally a reason to mess up my hacks, good one.

If the file for automatic updating were to be in the pball2 folder, wouldn't people be able to edit it to go to a different server to check for updates so they can bypass the whole "update or no play" thing?  Or would it be in the main .dll?

It's possible to put your menus in a separate directory and reference them with the language setting.  That way they won't get overwritten if new menus come out.

As for auto-updating... is that even what the original poster was requesting?

I think someone else mentioned it.  I think it's a good idea but it's the original poster's decision.

As long as it updates the game without having to open the internet all the time, i'm all for it.

All I wanted to do is get the idea out there so you guys could build on it. :D

Open the internet?  You mean a web browser?  What if it just opened the appropriate download link in a web browser when a new version was released?

Can't it be a direct update without having to open a web browser?  It just brings up a window, you select yes or no to download it, and the game downloads the file, then runs it and has something in the installation about having to close the game, etc.

Currently the game does not support http downloads, but It may be possible to write a script in PHP or similar to serve files as a fake server, Sk89q already has a basic fake server.

Doesn't tastyspleen.net do that?

They use HTTP redirects for people connecting with R1Q2 compatible clients, I think. Even if they did do what I said, it would be for the old download protocol with a max of 10kb/s.
