Servers
« on: July 09, 2009, 04:42:20 PM »
Ok, so as you all may know, servers are going down like crazy...and the Ij ones will be down at the end of the month...

me and a few others are all pitching in to put up some match servers to be available for use....

my question is what are some good server hosting companies? the ones i know of are dragongameservers, and extremecybergames, and others but they dont have dp2 servers...

thanks for the help in advance

- Isn't extremecybergames where supermans was hosted? I think those are the cheapest but since they are hosted in Canada alot of players complain. Although if its the only servers to match on they will prob suck it up. So IF your willing to pay or have alot of people pitching then you can look for better servers, or get the box.

didnt have any real problems with XCG but if you want to take the time an learn linux a VPS would be the better option since you can host 2-3 small match servers for the cost of 1.

If we bought xcg servers they wouldn't show up either.  Why pay extra for servers to show up when most people connect with ip anyway.  Also gold and gonass would never buy from dragon servers again they said.  So that site is probably out of the question.

What about a box like this?

Intel Pentium D 3.0Ghz

    * 1GB RAM 800mhz
    * 250GB Hard Drive
    * 2 Core + 800Mhz FSB

    * 2000GB Transfer
    * 5 IPS
    * 100MB Port

$69 per month! Order and Configure

from https://interserver.net/custom-managed-dedicated-servers.html

would that run 3 dp servers and maybe more?

That would run about 16x16 slot servers, if not more :)

if you lowered that down to 8x8 would that turn 1 16x16 into 2 8x8 servers or would that cost more?

1.  Viciouz I'm a little confused now since there are two idiots posting here.  Is that 1 16 slot or 16 16 slot servers?

2.  Nick how would is cost more?  Simple division.  You should be able to run two 8 slots if it can run 1 16 slot.

3.  Nick the purpose of a dedicated server "box" is so you get 1 server and you can run whatever you want from it.  Like as many DP servers as possible.  Or DP servers IRC bot vent server ect.  It's one price and you can do what you want with it.  Which is why it's considered a better buy.  Unfortunately most good ones cost a lot of money.

He meant 16 16 slot servers.  Its funny how people don't realise how dedicated servers are worth more for the value :).

Cameron is right, I meant 16 16 slot ones - all you need to run 1 16 slot server is 100Mhz or so and 32MB ram, or at least those are the reccomended requirements for a q2 server I think - plus you have all the internet connectivity you need in a datacenter. In addition, you could cut it down a few and turn on "sv_cullentities 1", which will use more CPU but should virtually destroy the usefulness of all wallhacks as well as reducing bandwidth - although I haven't actually been able to test this on a proper running server yet.

Hmm might have to just get the box then since there are pretty much no good sites that host DP.

Thanks Viciouz.
