Has anyone worked with elgg, or ever tried putting together a social network site?

I'm trying to start working on a small social network using elgg, and then adding a theme and extra widgets with php. I got a couple php books, since I'm not too experienced with it yet.

But does anyone have some good advice/tutorials/etc if they've had experience with it.

If anyone wants to tell me opinions on what to add/change/remove, feel free to do so also.  So far I'm only working with the features, and plan to do the theme/layout last.   P.S. It may be a bit slow, it's not a very large hosting plan as of now.
