ping shows you the distance from the client (your computer) to the server (the game you are playing in).

so the lower the ping the quicker the game responds to your actions, such as shooting, etc.

generally the faster your internet connection, the lower your ping.

Actually, it's the time, in milliseconds, it takes data to reach the server, not the physical distance to the server.

There's relatively little relation between time and distance in this case; the main factor is connection speed as jitspoe said.  You could live down the street from a server on a dial-up connection and somebody on the other side of the world on a DSL/Cable connection would have a lower ping than you.
