Font color distorted

Each time I type in ctrl+k then a letter, for example a ctrl+k a should be red, my colors seem to be darkened by 50%.
Any way around this?

Bright red is A, not a. Caps make difference.

But make sure you hold shift, and not actually press "CapsLock" otherwise it won't work. ;D
