Author Topic: Windows 7 vs. Xp (Read 12127 times)

Ok, so I have an ASUS netbook (no gaming rig i know, but the specs are all double the requirement) that I use at home. I found dp and it worked great with xp. Then i "upgraded" to windows 7... Most people get that stupid "opengl" graphics error which I somehow got around. The game will run, but it's incredibly jerky/laggy/slow. I know it's not the hardware because it ran flawlessly with xp. Anyone have any clue what i could do differently?

video card driver / and or cpu usage is at max

Cpu usage is good and it should be the same driver. Im using an intel 945 express chipset. Should i reinstall the drivers?

go to control panel in there is a tab in the top bar select view by : large icons, then select device manager. once you double click it do you have any yellow question marks in any of the tabs?

also please give the notebook model number.

Nope. Ans sorry its an asus 1000HE. Upgraded to 2gb of ram

did you get your drivers fron this website?

enter your model number in the search bar in the left then after selecting your computer select Win 7 on the os tab. download the chipset and vga drivers and install them see if that will work.

if your looking in the general tab its >Eee Family > Eee PC > 1000HE

also what i found helps is start the game then ctrl alt delete , select task manager, go to processes find paitnball2 and set the priority to high. i still think the cpu load is to high for it to handle.

vLaD: I got the drivers. I know what im doing as far as that goes. Only thing different is i had to update the bios for windows 7. Ill have to check what the cpu usage is but like i said xp ran it fine. With wmp limewire skype and whatever else running in the background. But ive closed all unnecessary stuff and it still lags using 7.

And I'll get back to you and justin on the specs.

it because Windows 7 needs A LOT more power then XP (power meaning RAM, and CPU etc...) . I have windows 7 right now, and so far i don't really like it. I kinda wish i had XP back.

This is the requirements for windows 7:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

This is XP:

Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution
Sound card
Speakers or headphones

Here are the specs on my netbook:

Atom processor (1.66 GHz)
2 gb ram
160 gb hdd
directx 11 graphics card

I know that windows 7 puts more of a strain on the processor, but it shouldnt be enough to kill a low-power game like this should it?

Oh and im using 32 bit.

hm, thats weird. Did you buy the windows 7 disk? or did you find it online? If you bought it take it to a computer place and get them to check it out. (Best Buy, Future shop..etc) Now if you found it online, i'm betting that it must be missing some files or something like that, but i'm no computer wiz.

No we ordered it but its a genuine copy. And vLaD i just had task manager in the background and it stayed at a solid 1gb memory usage and it ranged from about 60-75% cpu usage. Occasionally it would spike, but for whatever reason it did it when the game was running like it should be. Its fine if its just me but the instant someone comes about it slows down. In a roomful i cant even turn around fast enough without getting killed 20 times.

it is probably a dual core and 60-75% could say one side is maxed and the other side is not.

dp only uses 1 core so when you check your cpu usage under the performance tab and see if one side is all the way up. if it is then set the priority.

its the processor or video card.

also try this go to task manager click new task. type in msconfig. hit enter select selective startup. and uncheck load start up items. close select never show again and restart. that will kill most of the pointless processes.

Im not saying youre wrong, im just wondering why theres so much of a drastic difference between 7 and xps performance.

And ill think ill just go with this solution: put xp on an external hard drive.

I'm believing that it should be the video card, that's why I wanted to see the fps vs netgraph to rule out comp vs. internet also.

Since you have windows 7 now, look at your windows experience index in the computer properties and tell what your gaming graphics sub-score is. If anything, try changing the theme to windows 7 basic while playing, to get rid of a lot of graphic intensive things.

Justin - All the downloads for netgraph couldnt be found and i forgot about the fps. But i normally play fullscreen so the graphic interface shouldnt matter should it? But as for internet that wouldnt be a good judge right now because like every server i got on was lagging pretty bad (on everyones part)

Oh, and experience index is 2.0.

You do realize XP is directx 9 and Win7 is directx 10 and 11. Your video card probably can't handle directx 10. I'm sure there is a way to force DX9, but I'm not sure exactly how to do it.

Did you happen to change your screen resolution when you installed Windows 7? If you increased it you could see a drop in video performance.

@battle - How can you not like Windows 7? It's has all the bells and whistles like Vista, only runs like XP. It does require more powerful computers to run it, but if your computer can handle it, it runs like a beast.

windows 7 can take directx9 it is only saying that windows 7 is compatible with directX 10 and 11 and xp is not.

Yes Windows 7 can use directx9, but it is set by default to use 10 or higher. His netbook probably can't handle that.
