[FIX/REQUEST]Activation Period
« on: June 01, 2011, 06:06:03 PM »
Currently, when an account is made and not activated, someone else can also make an account with the same name but are unable to activate it.

Eg.
Name: RickIsABeast
Player ID: 1337
Not Activated
Email: RickHasABigHead@Rmail.com

Someone can also make an account:

Name: RickIsABeast
Player ID: 13336
Not Activated
Email: youtoo@pole.com

Because the first account was not activated, someone else is able to make an account using the same name. The problem that comes up now is everytime account #2 tries to activate their account, it will try to activate account #1. Meaning that account #2 won't be able to be activated.

What I am proposing is maybe an activation period where an account owner has 7 days? to activate their account otherwise it will be deleted.

OR

Make it so even if an account is not activated, an account with the same name can not be made.

Example of this problem: http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=21857.msg205080#msg205080

A 24 hour activation period should be plenty. And if the account is not activated then it should be deleted and the next person should be free to create an account with that name. Basically if you snooze you lose; meaning you shouldn't have activated your account.

Right now how it should be is a second person shouldn't even be able to create an account if the account name is already in use by someone else.

Maybe a little more than 24 hours, maybe 72? Just incase someone is unable to access their email or something.

Exactly, it should be fixed.

Why would they not have access to their email if they have access to be able to start the activation process?

Power outage, strict parents, homework, irl issues may arise. But yeah, I didn't think that through. Haha.

+1, and make it retroactive (delete all of the old non-activated accounts)

what about a sudden connection break-down? That happened to me a lot in the past. I think we should stick to 72 hours, just like Rick proposed.

Furthermore, +1 to this:

+1, and make it retroactive (delete all of the old non-activated accounts)

Get non-poor internet. As you can see I am mainly resorting to trolling at this point, which means discussion is done just implement now.

72 hours rather than 24 hours is a better period, imo. Problem's do happen and people might not recieve their activation code. Then they will have to come and ask Jitspoe to activate it, which he wouldn't do within a 24 hour period.

In my case, it took almost 1 day to recieve activation e-mail. Yeah, bad mailbox you say, but 72h is obviously better idea - we don't need to delete these not activated accounts as fast as possible, but we want to delete those, which won't be ever activated... Then even 1 week activation maybe :P

(wtf, Spell Check doesn't work - enjoy my mistakes :D )

The way it's supposed to work is if there is an unactivated account, and somebody registers another account with the same name, IP, or email address, it will overwrite the original unactivated account.  This is so somebody who mistypes or puts in an otherwise invalid email address will have a chance to re-register without creating multiple accounts.  There is a bug, though, where a situation like you described is possible (happened with DragonForce, I believe).  I haven't had a chance to investigate it yet, but it's on my list.
