Quake II: Source - GNU Quake 2?
« on: June 12, 2006, 10:11:40 AM »
CURRENT STATUS: Working on GUI graphics! (SEP 7 06)

REFERENCE:
I have been working on a project called Quake II: Source - It's an application of the PB2 Engine for people who own a retail copy of Quake II and its mission packs. It integrates this engine into the game installation and the end users can benefit from the enhancments. I call this project Quake II: Source, because the engine its based on is in a few ways like the Source engine by Valve Software. This is not a Quake II Source Engine port. The Paintball 2 engine supports REFLECTIVE WATER, and 48KHz sound.

I was actually considering doing the same thing after seeing a DDay thread about using paintball2 to play.  I'm not sure if it would be better to make it a separate project or make the paintball2 engine support both Quake2 and Paintball2.  On one hand, there would be a lot of redundant things having them be different projects, but on the other hand, Paintball2 is moving further and further away from Quake2, so it might be difficult to keep them compatible.  The ideal solution would be to make a client side DLL, like some engines have done, and keep it all one project, I think.

Its quite an alpha-ish product when it comes to UI and HUD, but the reflective water in Stroggos is amazing. I will post some animated gifs later.

No buddy, it will run on as low as Win98 SE, or even 95 with massive updates. I chose WXP because thats what I use, I will add more compat os's to the list.

No problem tinman, just supply me with the binarys (unpackaged please) and I will apply my modifications and get them back to you. Please, do not send the game media, like sounds, textures, and other space consuming files, i am on dial up for the majority of my internet use.

I mean unpackaged as in no .deb .rpm .tgz
.7z .uha .rar are fine.

Latest S/F post:

I believe the current build is alpha19.rar, meaning thats how far it came from build 1 being a copy of Digital Paintball 2. I will have a change log created by the end of this week, and I will be examining the sources of alpha 16 of the Digital Paintball 2 to see what else I can do to make it more like the Quake II interface. Right now, alpha 19 of Q2S has hud problems, but the Quake II levels, particularly the ones containing water are an awesome sight. Im not sure if this project will make it to a flawless release, but as of now it is stable.

Is there a way to make build 16 not need OpenGL drivers to run the .exe ?
I would love if you made a source that allows me to use the build 16 style/layout and have the servers still think
im using build 16. New computer hasnt come in yet. but I would love to play it.

I'm not going to quit, but I had a storage problem and lost the project, the download is working for me and I am downloading it. If you people can find enhancements for quake 2 like new sounds and textures made for Quake II, The Reckoning, and Ground Zero, please share your links here so I can add them to the pack. If we get enough substitutions, we might be able to design a new game all together... like Quake 2 1/2!

I`d like to see jitui.dll or something for menus so other engines could simply add it. :(
And yea NICE working link there for alpha 26 ;)

afortier, if the upload doesn't work, pm me and I can set something up that should. I've had to figure out getting past bad upload many times before.

Im having trouble uploading, and the project is halted, because I cant seem to create maps with water in them using quark. However I have been working on porting Half-Life maps to PB2, but again the water is stiff!
